Exfoliating acids (AHAs & BHAs)
Exfoliating acids dissolve the ‘glue’ between dull surface cells — the gentler, more even way to exfoliate. The key is knowing which acid, and not overdoing it.
AHAs vs BHAs
Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) — like glycolic and lactic acid — are water-soluble and work on the skin's surface, making them a good choice for dullness, texture and tone. Beta hydroxy acid (BHA) — salicylic acid — is oil-soluble, so it can get into pores, which makes it useful for congestion and oilier skin.
Rather than scrubbing, they gently loosen the bonds between dead surface cells so they shed more evenly.
What they're designed to do
Used well, exfoliating acids are designed to reveal smoother, brighter, more even skin and to keep pores clearer. They also help the products you apply afterwards absorb better.
The professional version — a considered in-clinic peel — takes the same principle further, under supervision.
How to use them safely
Less is more: a couple of times a week is plenty for most people, ideally at night, always followed by diligent daily SPF (acids can increase sun sensitivity). Over-exfoliating is a common cause of irritated, compromised skin — if it stings or looks red, ease off.
The right acid and frequency for your skin is best set with guidance, especially across different skin tones.

Common questions
What's the difference between AHA and BHA?
AHAs (like glycolic and lactic acid) are water-soluble and work on the surface for dullness and texture; BHA (salicylic acid) is oil-soluble and gets into pores, so it suits congestion and oilier skin.
How often should I use exfoliating acids?
For most people, a couple of times a week is plenty, at night, with daily SPF afterwards. Over-exfoliating irritates skin — more is not better.
Are exfoliating acids the same as a professional peel?
They work on the same principle but at-home acids are gentler. An in-clinic peel takes it further under professional supervision, tailored to your skin.
